Wednesday MP3 Six Pack – Dec. 9th edition
Each Wednesday I’ll be bringing you six songs you need to go out and download now! Have a recommendation for the Tipping Glass community? Leave a comment and we might feature it in next week’s six pack! At the bottom of the post you can preview and buy songs courtesy of Amazon.
1. White Lies – To Lose My Life
This kick-ass alternative track is very dark and moody. White Lies sound a lot like The Cure and Joy Division, so if you like either of those bands you’ll love this track and their latest album (also titled “To Lose My Life”). The hooks are very catchy, the vocals are raw and the drums are tight. What’s not to like?
2. Trans-Siberian Orchestra – A Mad Russian’s Christmas
Tis the season, after all, and this is a stand-out track by the very popular orchestra. This song is fun and exciting as it changes from their classic Christmas tunes about every 20-30 seconds. It’s very upbeat and is easily one of my favorite songs by them.
3. Sarah Jaffe – Ever Born Again
I first heard Sarah off of the Austin City Limits sampler pack (which was amazing, btw) and she is truly a gem. Her voice and her 6-song EP (titled “Ever Born Again”) will send you into a beautiful trance as you are able to feel the emotion she captures in each track. She definitely has a unique sound, but I think what attracts me to her the most is the raw emotion of each track. Great song-writing, too.
4. Pete Yorn – Lose You
Most people will remember this song from the House episode last season where Kutner committed suicide. Pete’s soft voice throughout the song captures the power behind its lyrics and you’ll quickly find yourself feeling the same emotions the House crew felt when they heard the news. This is a great track off a very solid album that you should definitely download.
5. Hawksley Workman – Smoke Baby
This guy is one of the most underrated artists in today’s music. Everything from the beat of the song, the catchy chorus and even the rap-verse three quarters of the way into the song will keep this song on your MP3 player for a long time. This song came highly recommended from Tipping Glass reader (and at one time author) Lyndsay Walker. She fully endorses her fellow Canadian and he doesn’t disappoint.
6. Lostprophets – Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)
Oh how I love this song. The great thing about this track is how it builds and builds and builds all the way through the song to the point where you want to scream along with the band. This album was released back in 2006 when the UK phenom finally brought their music to the U.S. From start to finish their album “Liberation Transmission” is a work of art.
