Week 14 NFL Preview Review

Each Monday, I will review the preview I made before the weekend’s games. I will own up to any bad predictions, and brag about my foresight, in hindsight.

Carolina Panthers (5-8) at New England Patriots (8-5)

Results: New England 20, Carolina 10

What Happened: Even with Randy Moss pouting and Tom Brady struggling, the Patriots won with a solid game from Wes Welker and Laurance Maroney.

My Prediction: Patriots win in a landslide.

Foresight in Hindsight: This one was closer than the score shows, with Carolina holding on a little longer than the Patriots were comfortable with. At times, it seemed like Welker was the only person on the field actually trying.

Cincinnati Bengals (9-4) at Minnesota Vikings (11-3)

Results: Minnesota 30, Bengals 10

What Happened: Carson Palmer threw for only 94 (yes, that’s not a typo) yards and the running game never got moving for the Bengals. The Vikings dominated both sides of the line, as Peterson ran for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns.

My Prediction: Cincinnati clinches the AFC North as the Vikings can’t handle all the injuries to the defense and the Bengals will run all over them.

Foresight in Hindsight: Well I was wrong on this one. Favre had a ho-hum day, but didn’t make any big mistakes. The Bengals couldn’t run or throw the ball, and the Vikings just looked like the better team out there.

Buffalo Bills (5-8) at. Kansas City Chiefs (3-10)

Results: Buffalo 16, Kansas City 10

What Happened: Two inept offenses. Two mediocre defenses. Who would play worse? That honor is given to the Chefs (not a typo). Both quarterbacks were terrible, combining for 6 interceptions and 2 fumbles, but at least the Bills aren’t paying theirs $10 million a year.

My Prediction: Bills win a tight game, with a defensive goal line stand.

Foresight in Hindsight: There were two big red zone stops for the Bills in this game. One was in the first quarter, when Aaron Shobel sniffed out a Cassel naked bootleg and slammed him to the turf 5 for a loss on 4th and goal. The other was Jarius Byrd picking off Cassel at the 10 yard line to seal a Buffalo victory.

Denver Broncos (8-5) at Indianapolis Colts (13-0)

Results: Indianapolis 28, Denver 16
What Happened: After seeing their 21-0 lead dwindle to a 5 point lead in the 4th quarter, the Colts stepped it up. Manning and Clark met for 3 touchdowns. Another Colts #1 playoff seed. Another 13 win season. Doesn’t it seem like the same story every year?

My Prediction: The Colts will clinch homefield advantage with a victory. Manning throws for over 3 TDs.

Foresight in Hindsight: 22 consecutive regular season victories. Another Colts #1 playoff seed. Another 13 win season. Doesn’t it seem like the same story every year?

The NFL is creating a partnership with researchers at Boston University who are studying the long-term effects of brain injuries on players, the Associated Press reported. “It’s huge that the NFL Draftactively gets behind this research,” Robert Cantu, the co-director of the school’s research program, told the AP. “It forwards the research. It allows players to realize the is concerned about the possibility that they could have this problem and that the NFL is doing everything it can to find out about the risks and the preventive strategies that can be implemented.”
